WS 7.1 Bicycles and winter service in urban areas

Maintenance of the urban network can vary from major highways to dead-end roads where space is very limited. Most people live in cities and many do not use personal transportation. Multimodal transport is common in most cities, snow and ice in winter has an impact on different types of transport and their connections. Due to the intense use of urban areas the environment of these areas is exposed to winter service operations. Bicycling becomes more popular every year and not only in summer but the whole year. While winter service for cars is well known and has much experience, it is rather new for bicycles. Riding a bicycle on a slippery surface has a higher risk of injuring compared to driving a with four wheels. Solutions or methods in winter service used on bike lanes are shown in this session.
